Woman dies after Mayo mountain fall

The body of a woman who died in a fall Mweelrea mountains has been airlifted to Mayo General Hospital.

The 50-year-old woman, who was an accomplished hill climber, died after she fell about 20m while walking on Ben Bury peak yesterday evening.

The woman and her husband, both from Dublin, were descending the mountainside when the accident happened.

The husband raised the alarm and he was taken to safety by rescue services.

A post mortem examination is due to be carried out at the hospital in Castlebar.

Garda Chief Superintendent Tony McNamara, who coordinated the recovery operation, said the woman's body was recovered after an all night search.
