Police in the US have arrested a 51-year-old man following the fatal shooting of a doctor who performed late-term abortions.

67-year-old George Tiller was shot dead while he attended his church in Wichita, Kansas yesterday.

Scott Roeder was arrested about three hours after Dr Tiller was killed.

Although Scott Roeder has connections to anti-abortion groups, law enforcement officials believe he was acting as ‘one individual’.

Attorney General Eric Holder said federal authorities offered protection to ‘appropriate people and facilities’ across the country after the shooting Sunday.

He called Dr Tiller's murder ‘an abhorrent act of violence’.

President Barack Obama has expressed shock and outrage at the killing, and said differences over abortion could not be resolved by acts of violence.

Dr Tiller was one of only a few US doctors who performed late-term abortions. He had been shot and wounded by an assailant 16 years ago.
