A prison officer at a high security jail in Northern Ireland has been suspended from duty while police investigate alleged drugs offences.

The 44-year-old man was arrested by PSNI detectives at Maghaberry Prison near Lisburn in Co Antrim on Monday.

The prison officer was then released on bail pending further police inquiries and has not been charged with any offence.

A Northern Ireland Prison Service spokesman said the warder had been suspended from duty in the jail as a precautionary measure, and as the PSNI investigation is ongoing no further comment would be made.

Maghaberry is the North's main high security jail holding over 60 loyalist and republican prisoners and nearly 800 other inmates.
