Thousands attend Milltown ceremony

Milltown Cemetery - Annual blessing
Milltown Cemetery - Annual blessing

Several thousand people have attended the annual blessing of the graves at Milltown Cemetery in west Belfast.

A plot of land that had been sold off several years ago, despite the fact it contained the remains of unbaptised babies and still-born infants, was consecrated during the ceremony.

Bishop of Down and Connor Dr Noel Treanor led prayers for the relatives of the babies buried there.

It is thought the plot contains possibly thousands of unmarked graves some of them dating back over 100 years.
