The Commission for Taxi Regulation has rejected criticism of licence fee increases which were introduced last week.
The comment came as a group calling itself Taxi Drivers for Change staged a protest in Dublin this afternoon.
Gardaí said around 100 people took part in the demonstration.
The cost of a five year Public Service Vehicle licence increased from €3 to €250 at the beginning of the month.
The Taxi Drivers for Change group claims there was a lack of consultation about the new charges and says the concerns of those working in the sector are not being acknowledged.
The organisers accuse the Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey, and the Taxi Regulator, Kathleen Doyle, of not listening to their concerns.
However, the Commission for Taxi Regulation has said it signalled the increase in a number of policy documents in recent years.
A spokesperson for the Regulator said the cost of a licence had not changed since 1977 and the new fee was required to cover the processing and renewal of applications.
The demonstration did not have the backing of any of the four unions representing the sector.
The unions are planning to protest outside the Regulator's office next Tuesday and say their concerns will only be resolved through dialogue with the Minister for Transport.
