Two earthquakes have killed at least 22 people and destroyed several hundred homes in eastern Afghanistan.

The quakes hit two hours apart in the district of Khogyani in Nangarhar province, near the Pakistan border.

Police have intensified the search for more dead and injured under the rubble of collapsed homes.

Khogyani district chief Haji Said Rahman said 'Four villages were seriously damaged by the two earthquakes. 22 people have been killed and 30 injured. More than 200 homes have been destroyed.'

The US Geological Survey said a 5.5 magnitude quake hit the area just before 2am (10.30pm Thursday, Irish time), followed by a 5.1 magnitude aftershock two hours later.

The interior ministry in Kabul confirmed an initial death toll of 19 and said police were in charge of the rescue.

Other quakes overnight

Elsewhere, a strong 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Chile. No fatalities have been reported.

The quake occurred just after 10pm (2am Irish time), with its epicentre under the Pacific Ocean, 80km northwest of the port city of Iquique and 177km south of the southern Peruvian city of Tacna, and at a depth of 10km.

Chilean officials said there had been an earlier quake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale.

And there was a moderate 5.6-magnitude tremor in Indonesia's eastern Maluku province, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

It happened at just after 1pm (5am Irish time) about 325km southwest of Saumlaki town at a depth of 114km.

No tsunami alert was issued.
