A Webley revolver thought to have belonged to Michael Collins was sold at auction in Dublin today for €72,000.

The revolver was taken from Collins' car after he was killed.

It was described in the catalogue as ‘probably General Collins' own sidearm’.

It is understood the buyer lives in Ireland.

At the same History and Literature auction at the RDS, a collection of letters about Padraig Pearse's St Enda's School, including five penned by Pearse himself, sold for €23,000.

In the run up to today's auction there had been considerable interest in a button taken from Pearse's tunic before he was executed, which was also due to go under the hammer.

But the object was withdrawn by the owner yesterday.

It had been expected to fetch up to €30,000.
