A rescue operation was launched in Cork for a man missing after the car he was in left a cross-river ferry as it approached Carrigaloe near Cobh.

One man was rescued at the scene and taken to Cork University Hospital. He is said to be shaken but uninjured.

The car has been located but a second man, who is understood to be in his 30s, is missing.

The Naval Service received a call from the Port of Cork for assistance shortly before 7pm.

Gardaí and the Crosshaven lifeboat also taking part in the search.

The cross-river ferry travels between Glenbrook and Carrigaloe.
