As Lord Mandelson arrived for a summit on the British government's carbon strategy, Plane Stupid protestor Leila Deen approached him and threw a large cupful of green custard straight in the face of the former Northern Ireland Secretary.

Mr Mandelson bent down, turned away and walked inside, while the protestor picked her papers up off the floor and wandered off.

29-year-old charity worker Leila Deen said she threw the custard at Mr Madelson to show that there is nothing green about him 'except the slime coarsing through his veins'.

Her group Plane Stupid, which has launched a number of protests in the recent past, opposes development of a third runway at Heathrow Airport.

She said her direct action was a last resort.

Lord Mandleson described the incident as 'adolescent', but thanked the protestor for highlighting today's environmental summit on green industries.

As a former Northern Ireland Secretary, he would still be entitled to 24-hour police protection, but has refused it.

The British Government last month approved the new runway at Heathrow despite opposition by MPs, local residents and green camapigners.
