The growing jobs crisis in Loughrea, Co Galway was being discussed at a public meeting in the town this evening.
The Chamber of Commerce says it is extremely concerned that two of the town's largest industries are closing down with the loss of more than 200 jobs.
Many small local industries and businesses have laid off staff and introduced short-time working since Christmas.
One of the issues that will be discussed at the meeting is a demand from shop owners and business people for the reintroduction of free parking on Saturdays to stimulate trade.
They say it is absolutely essential that every effort is made to get shoppers back to the town.
The public was invited to attend this evening's meeting, which was taking place at 6pm in O'Dea's Hotel.
