Four units of Dublin Fire Brigade have brought a fire at the headquarters of the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Rathfarnham under control.

The fire broke out at around 4pm in a barn at the south Dublin site where feed supplies are stored.

A spokeswoman for the DSPCA said no people or animals were in danger but that the entire hay barn had been destroyed.

She said the barn and a year's supply of feed, including hay, was destroyed. A tractor and some other heavy equipment were also damaged.

The full extent of the damage caused by the fire has yet to be assessed, but the spokeswoman described the loss as 'devastating'.
