Hundreds missing after Costa Rica quake

Hundreds of people are missing in Costa Rica after a strong earthquake last night.

They may include up to 400 foreign tourists.

At least 14 people died following the quake.

The magnitude-6.1 quake shook the country at lunchtime (about 7.20pm Irish time), only 30km northwest of the capital, San Jose, causing houses to collaps and setting off landslides that blocked major highways.

The death toll could rise as rescue operations were heading for previously inaccessible areas.

Hundreds of people are stranded in the Vara Blanca and Cinchona areas, near San Jose, after the strongest earthquake to shake the country in the last 150 years.

About 400 tourists are trapped in a hotel near La Paz waterfalls which was cut off from roads by a landslide.

President Oscar Arias visited the quake zone this afternoon.

He said: 'These losses of life fill us with pain; our prayers will be for their families.'
