The value of the euro has exceeded 95p sterling for the first time.
After scaling new heights all morning, the euro hit a high of 95.56 pence this afternoon before falling back to just under 95.3 pence at 5.40pm.
The latest surge in the euro comes after more gloomy UK economic figures hit the pound and sparked off new speculation about further interest rate cuts in the UK in the coming months.
Sterling has lost more than a quarter of its value against the euro and the dollar over the last year.
