A fire on the university campus in Maynooth, Co Kildare, has been brought under control.

Extensive damage was caused to a students' restaurant on the north campus and will be out of action for some time.

Firefighters managed to stop the fire spreading to an adjoining sports hall.

The fire service was alerted at 11.27am this morning. Four units from Leixlip and Maynooth fire services were sent to the scene.

The university said the building and surrounding buildings were immediately evacuated in accordance with its fire procedure and no-one was injured.

Several thousand secondary school students were on the campus at the time for an open day. Further open day events over the coming days are not affected.

In a separate incident, a man and four small children were taken to hospital in Dublin early this morning following a serious house fire.

The fire broke out in the kitchen of a house at Oak View Way in Clonsilla at about 1.30am this morning.

The man and four children under the age of five were rescued from the fire by the Dublin Fire Brigade.

They were taken to a number of hospitals for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Five units of Dublin Fire Brigade attended the fire.
