Eamon Gilmore - Criticises the Government

The Labour Party is calling on the Government to provide education and training support to the tens of thousands of people who have lost their jobs in the past year.

It has accused the Government of showing shocking indifference to the plight of 80,000 people who are unemployed.

Labour leader Eamon Gilmore says the understandable focus of attention on the Government's rescue package for the banks this week meant that the latest Live Register figures did not get the attention they deserved.

Mr Gilmore said Government action was needed to assist those now unemployed.

He was speaking as further figures from the Central Statistics Office show a record increase in unemployment of almost 50% over the past year.

The Live Register figures for September also show that unemployment among non-Irish workers had risen to 17% - up from just over 13% last year.

Non-Irish workers represent about 16.6% of the total labour force, according to the CSO.

Almost half of the non-Irish people on the Live Register in September were from the 12 new member countries, which have joined the EU states since 2004, while just over 11,000 were from the UK.
