Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has threatened to form a government unilaterally if the opposition does not sign a power-sharing deal today.

But Morgan Tsvangirai's opposition Movement for Democratic Change said any attempts by Mr Mugabe to pressure it into an agreement would fail.

Power-sharing talks were deadlocked in mid-August over Mr Mugabe's desire to retain control of the country's security forces.

Last ditch attempts by South African President Thabo Mbeki to revive the negotiations last week failed.

The earlier power-sharing deal put forward under Mr Mbeki proposed that Mr Tsvangirai become prime minister and Mr Mugabe retain the presidency in an inclusive government.

But Mr Tsvangirai said yesterday he had rejected the deal because the president would keep control of the security forces.

Today the MDC stressed that it would not react to Mr Mugabe's apparent ultimatum.
