A rescue operation is underway for a woman stranded in the McGillicuddy Reeks in Co Kerry.

The 24-year-old woman sustained serious leg injuries in a fall on the mountains this afternoon.

The Kerry Mountain Rescue Team are lowering the woman down the mountain by stretcher as she could not be reached by helicopter.

They are expected to be down from the mountain by midnight tonight.

The woman will then be transferred to Kerry General Hospital for treatment, though her injuries are not life threatening.

The alarm was raised at 4.30pm this afternoon.

It is understood the woman, who was out walking on her own, fell a considerable distance.
