A new Irish aid charity is warning that up to 100 million more African people are now at risk of extreme poverty.
Self Help Africa has been set up as a result of a merge between Irish charity Self Help Development International and UK based Harvest Help.
It will be working with local people on the ground in eight African countries, including Ethiopia, Kenya and Malawi.
The agency says farming and rural development is the key to helping Africans to break free from hunger and poverty.
Its CEO Ray Jordan says the global food shortage is having a devastating impact on many people.
Minister of State for Overseas Development Aid Peter Power officially launched Self Help Africa at the Irish Aid Centre on Dublin's O'Connell Street this afternoon.
It is the first ever merger between Irish and British development agencies.
