Police in Turkey are investigating the death of an Irish woman in the holiday resort of Kusadasi.

It is believed Mary Linnane, from Belmullet in Co Mayo, fell from an apartment building on Monday night.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed the 20-year-old's identity this morning. It is providing consular assistance to her family.

Ms Linnane was a student nurse at Dublin City University and the second youngest in a family of six.

She had travelled to the popular resort on Sunday with a party of friends. It was her first holiday abroad.

Her parents, Martin, a former senior inter-county hurler with Galway, and Kathleen, along with other family members, were being comforted at their home yesterday.

One local woman who knew Ms Linnane well said yesterday that the community was 'totally devastated' by what had happened.

‘We have been walking around in a state of numbed shock since we heard the terrible news at half six this morning,’ she said.

After visiting the grief-stricken family yesterday, Erris-based County Councillor Gerry Coyle said the community was heartbroken over the incident.

‘The Linnanes are deeply involved in the sporting and community life in Erris and are a very united and loving family,’ he said.
