A man is in a critical condition in hospital after falling into the River Liffey in Dublin.

Gardaí were told at about 1am that a man had fallen into the river at Butt Bridge.

They called for assistance and notified the Dublin Fire Brigade.

They discovered a man floating face down in the water between Eden Quay and Butt Bridge, approximately 1.5 metres out.

A Garda entered the water and dragged the man out.

He was not breathing, and gardaí administered CPR at the scene, assisted by the Fire Brigade.

The 38-year-old man was then taken to the Mater Hospital, where his condition is described as critical.
