A suicide bombing outside the Indian embassy in the Afghan capital, Kabul, has killed more than 40 people, many of them civilians waiting to collect visas.

At least 140 others were injured in this morning's explosion.

The bomber rammed a car packed with explosives into two diplomatic vehicles entering the embassy.

At least two Indian paramilitary troopers guarding the embassy were among those killed.

The Indian government said it strongly condemned the bombing, adding it feared some of its staff were among the dead.

Elsewhere, bombs in southern Afghanistan killed seven Afghan policemen.

Four of the policemen were killed when their vehicle was blown up by a roadside bomb in the town of Tirin Kot, capital of the southern province of Uruzgan.

Seven others were wounded in that attack.

In Kandahar province, a similar bomb blast killed three policemen and injured four.

Yesterday, the police chief of Nawa district in Ghazni province was shot dead as he was walking through a bazaar.
