Limerick City Council will meet this evening to elect a new mayor for the city.

The current mayor is Fine Gael Councillor Ger Fahy, and the party is expected to hold onto the office as a result of a pact with Labour.

It is expected that the Fine Gael nominee will be Councillor Kevin Kiely, who represents a ward on the north side of the city.

Fine Gael and Labour between them have 11 votes on the council. However, two of Labour's councillors, James Houlihan and Kieran Walsh, have resigned from the party over internal wrangling in the city.

It is not known if they will stick to the pact, but with nine votes between the remaining Fine Gael and Labour councillors they still have a majority to elect their candidate.

Independent Councillor John Gilligan has also said he intends to put his name forward for the office.

Elsewhere, Labour Councillor Veronica Cawley has been elected as the new mayor of Sligo.
