A 23-year-old man is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after he got into difficulties in the canal in Galway city early yesterday morning.
The alarm was raised at about 5.30am when two men were spotted entering the canal basin at The Claddagh.
Emergency services carried out a rescue operation and the young man was brought to University College Hospital.
