The man whose conviction for the killing of Jill Dando was quashed last year is facing a retrial at the Old Bailey in London.

The BBC TV presenter was shot on the doorstep of her London home in April 1999.

The Court of Appeal overturned the conviction of Barry George, who is now 47, last November.

Three judges concluded that, in the light of fresh scientific evidence about firearms residue, there was no certainty that the jury would have convicted Mr George at his original trial in 2001.

He has always denied shooting Ms Dando. Mr George was arrested a year after the shooting and a speck of firearm residue was found on his coat.

But, ruling the conviction unsafe, the appeal judges said it was no more likely that it had come from a gun fired by him than from some other source.

They said the jury had been misled about the significance of the residue and they ordered a retrial.

However that retrial is likely to take place only after several days of legal argument.
