Coastguard - Busiest day for rescues

A body has been recovered by local people involved in a search for a 14-year-old boy who had fallen into the River Foyle in Co Donegal.

The body was found shortly after 9pm this evening.

A search got under way for the boy who fell into the river near St Johnston.

The Malin Head Coast Guard service says it understands the boy, who was fishing, fell into the river and was swept away at about 6pm this evening.

The Sligo-based Coast Guard helicopter, the Green Castle Coast Guard service and the Foyle Search and Rescue team, were involved in the operation.

Earlier today, a 27-year-old man who became ill while climbing Croagh Patrick, Co Mayo, was airlifted to hospital in Castlebar by the Sligo Coast Guard helicopter.

The helicopter had earlier rescued a man who fell into the sea at Killybegs. He was taken to Sligo General Hospital.

Meanwhile, an 11-year-old boy, who was injured in an abseiling accident near Newport in Co Tipperary this afternoon, has been airlifted to safety and is being brought to hospital in Limerick.

The coast guard service says the boy appears to have fallen about 100m into a gorge.

The Shannon-based helicopter succeeded in reaching him and flew him to Coonagh Airfield from where he was transferred to hospital in Limerick.

He is in a stable condition in hospital.

Elsewhere, a small fishing boat, which got into difficulty off the Kerry coast this morning, was rescued and was towed to safety.

The boat, with two people on board, developed steering difficulties a short distance from Fenit Island and was drifting onto rocks close to the island.

The local lifeboat was launched and succeeded in taking it in tow.

It is now being brought to Fenit Harbour.

The Coast Guard services said this has been one of the busiest days of the year for rescue operations.
