Three people have been rescued off the coast of Galway Bay.

The alarm was raised at around 4.30pm after their rigid inflatable boat sank.

The three were picked up by lifeboat south of Kilcolgan Point at around 4.45pm.

It is understood they are suffering from hypothermia.

They have been brought ashore to receive hospital treatment.

Meanwhile, a rescue operation was under way off Castletownbere for a sick crewman on board a Spanish fishing vessel.

The 38-year-old is understood to be suffering from appendicitis.

A spokesperson for the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick said he is in a 'comfortable' condition.
