Warning over contaminated mussels

Mussels - Two batches recalled
Mussels - Two batches recalled

The Food Safety Authority is advising consumers not to eat certain batches of frozen mussels produced by Bantry Bay Seafoods.

The mussels were sold through Aldi supermarkets a few months ago, and are no longer available. But some consumers may be still storing packets in their home freezers.

The Authority says toxins have been discovered in the batches. AZA (Azaspiracid Shellfish Poisoning toxins) are known to cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach cramps.

Batches of these frozen cooked mussels were supplied to the Aldi supermarket chain in the UK, which in turn were distributed to Aldi outlets in Ireland.

The Authority has been investigating the situation in conjunction with the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority.

Customers should return affected mussels to the retailers to seek a full refund.
