Chambers Ireland has accused trade unions of giving out misleading and incorrect information on the status of agency workers.

Directory of Policy Seán Murphy said that the changes called for by Irish trade unions regarding agency workers are unnecessary and unfounded and would almost certainly result in job losses.

Mr Murphy said that agency workers in Ireland have the same employment rights as their permanent counterparts and are protected by laws such as the Working Time Act 1997.

He said they come under the same remit regards equality, unfair dismissal and statutory redundancy payments.

He added that agency workers make a substantial contribution to the Irish economy.

Mr Murphy said that the availability of flexible employment arrangements facilitates many workers looking to return to the workplace either permanently or for short-term periods.
