A 54-year-old woman is in a critical condition following a fire at an apartment block in Dublin's north inner city.

A man in his 60s was also admitted to hospital with minor injuries.

The fire broke out at an apartment complex near the Four Courts at about 9.45pm last night.

The George's Hill Apartments on Halston Street are used by the charity, Focus Ireland, to provide accommodation for homeless people.

Five units of Dublin Fire Brigade attended the scene of the fire.

There are 55 apartments in the complex and a number of them were evacuated after the fire broke out.

Alternative accommodation has been arranged for the people who were forced to leave their apartments.

The scene has been sealed off for a technical examination.
