Motorists along the east coast and parts of the midlands have been urged to take care on the roads following severe flooding in many areas.

Roads in Dublin, Laois, Tipperary and Kildare were the worst affected following heavy downpours overnight.

Dublin Fire Brigade said that it had an extremely busy night, particularly in north Co Dublin, where many roads in Portmarnock and Clonshaugh were under several centimetres of water.

Flooding at Blake's Cross (R132) in Lusk has receded. The road has reopened and diversions have been lifted, however, motorists are still advised to take extra care. There is still no access towards the dump. Dublin Bus route 33 is back running as usual through Blake's Cross.

Motorists on the M1 northbound are able to access the Balbriggan exit again. Flooding in the area has subsided.

The Kylemore Road is still flooded between Bluebell Avenue and Kylemore Park South.

In Co Laois, the N7 Dublin to Limerick Road has been reduced to one lane through the town of Mountrath due to severe flooding.

The road is also badly flooded on the Dublin side of Roscrea.

Also in Tipperary the Templemore to Dunkerrin Road is completely closed.

In Kildare, gardaí are warning that there is bad flooding on most of the back roads in the county.

Ballyfermot Travellers' site flooded

Dozens of school children have been unable to go to school today because of severe flooding at a Travellers building project in Ballyfermot, Co Dublin.

About 55 families are living at the project on Lavre Park off the Kylemore Road in Ballyfermot.

Flood waters rose to the level of front doors of trailers in a halting site at the project, with locals saying that the dwellings would have been flooded had they not been raised on blocks.

A number of cars were trapped in the flood waters at the junction between Lavre Park and the Kylemore Road in the early hours of this morning.

Residents of the travellers project are calling on Dublin City Council to act immediately to prevent further serious flooding.
