Two Irish women have died in a road accident in Rome.

They were 28-year-old Elizabeth Anne Gubbins from Co Limerick and 29-year-old Mary Clare Collins from Co Kildare.

Ms Gubbins and Ms Collins, who were on holiday in the Italian capital, were walking on a pedestrian crossing when they were hit by a car and killed.

Police said the 32-year-old Italian driver was four times over the legal limit for alcohol when tested.

The accident happened at around 2am Irish time.

The driver has been charged with drink driving, manslaughter, failure to stop and give help at the scene of an accident and damage to public property.

He is due before a formal court hearing in relation to the charges at a later date.
