Unemployment at 4.9%

The rate of unemployment rose to 4.9% last month, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office.

It is the highest increase since December 1999.

The CSO says the seasonally adjusted Live Register shows an increase in unemployment of 7,800 to 179,400.

The monthly increase was made up of 6,400 men and 1,400 women, reflecting the continuing slowdown in the construction sector.
