The Department of Foreign Affairs has launched two initiatives to encourage Irish people heading abroad to travel safely.

A detailed document entitled 'Travel Safely, Slán Abhaile', sets out the range of Irish embassies and consulates abroad.

The department is also urging anyone travelling further than the UK to register their details on the website www.dfa.ie. It means they can be easily traced in case of an emergency.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern says it will be beneficial for those at home and abroad.
