The Labour Party has urged Revenue to break its traditional silence on individual tax affairs in order to clarify the position of the Taoiseach.
Labour's finance spokesperson Joan Burton said it would be in the 'public and democratic interest' for Revenue to state whether statements made by the Taoiseach about his dealings with them were accurate.
However a spokesperson for Revenue insisted it never comments on individual tax affairs.
Ms Burton called in particular for clarification on whether it was treating Mr Ahern's dealings as a 'voluntary disclosure'.
She also asked whether it was awaiting the Mahon Tribunal report before deciding whether the Taoiseach had a tax liability.
Deputy Burton said a letter from a Revenue official in November 2006 indicated it was not treating the matter as a voluntary disclosure, while a final decision was reached in the case of Deputy Michael Lowry before the publication of the final report of the Moriarty Tribunal.
