Dublin Coast Guard has called off a search for a man who was thought to have got into difficulties off Dún Laoghaire pier.
They say there is no evidence that a man who was rescuing another man remained in the water.
A woman raised the alarm after the first man went into the sea.
The Coast Guard managed to rescue him, however, the woman then noticed that a second man had entered the sea in an effort to help the first man.
It was originally thought that he had also got into difficulty.
