US sending extra troops to Afghanistan

The Pentagon has confirmed that 3,200 extra US troops are to be sent to Afghanistan this spring.

Most of the marines will help NATO fight the Taliban in the south of the country, while 1,000 of the contingent will help train Afghan security forces.

The US already has about 26,000 troops in Afghanistan.
