US denies approval of airstrikes

Northern Iraq - Turkey sent air raids against Kurdish rebels

The US has denied that it approved Turkish air strikes against Kurdish rebels in Iraq.

The Turkish military said it attacked targets of the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party on Sunday with the approval of US occupying forces in Iraq.

The US said only that it had been informed in advance of the operation.

Turkish ground forces shelled areas where the rebels were based, with 50 aircraft taking part in the three-hour operation.

The Turkish military said it hit all of its targets, and said none of those targets included civilians.

Officials in northern Iraq, however, said Turkish warplanes bombed villages, killing one woman and forcing hundreds of people to flee their homes.

Iraq Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari demanded an immediate end to air strikes on Iraqi territory.

The European Union expressed concern on Monday at Turkey's air raids on Kurdish separatist targets in northern Iraq and urged Ankara to show restraint. The EU called on Turkey to respect the territorial integrity of Iraq.

Ankara's faltering EU entry bid is expected to move forward on Wednesday with the opening of talks on two more policy areas, despite opposition from countries such as France, which argues that Turkey is not European.
