Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has said he knew nothing about a false invoice in 1993 which was used to raise money for him as part of the so-called dig out loans by friends.

The former boss of NCB Stockbrokers, Padraic O'Connor, told the Mahon Tribunal last week that his company gave a £5,000 payment for Mr Ahern's constituency organisation through Des Richardson on the back of a false invoice.

Mr Richardson has denied using the false invoice.

Today the Taoiseach accepted that the use of false invoices was wrong and was not the way he would have done business.

Earlier, Mr Ahern rejected claims that he gave approval to the National Lottery to enter talks with Manchester businessman Norman Turner about becoming involved in his plans for a casino in Dublin.

However, John Hynes, the former chief executive of An Post, has said he is standing firm behind those claims, which he made last week.
