US air strikes have killed 14 civilian road workers in eastern Afghanistan.
It is understood US planes and helicopters attacked a camp of tents in a remote area of Nuristan province late last night.
The workers were employed by Amerifa Construction Company which has been building a road around 180km northeast of Kabul.
The bodies of many of the roadworkers were in pieces after the attack, according to the head of the Nuristan provincial council, Taj Mohammad.
Families had to identify the men by their clothes, watches or other features as most could not be recognised by their faces, he said.
The US claims it had been tipped off that a local Taliban commander was in the area, but hit the wrong target.
NATO has tightened procedures for launching air strikes after Afghan President Hamid Karzai warned of rising anger over mounting civilian casualties.
Nuristan is an isolated mountain province on the border with Pakistan that has seen occasional fighting between security forces and Taliban militants.
