A man who was extradited from Ireland to the US last year is due to go on trial in Washington today charged with killing three people in a road accident in 2001.

29-year-old Frederick Russell faces three counts of vehicular homicide and three counts of vehicular assault when he appears in Kelso, Cowlitz County in Washington.

Three students from Washington State University were killed and three others injured in the accident which occurred in the town of Pullman.

Court papers claim Mr Russell was drunk and speeding when the accident occurred. He faces ten to 14 years in prison if he is convicted.

He fled the US after the accident and was spotted in Ireland by a man who recognised him from a picture on the FBI's most wanted list. He had been working as a security guard in Dublin.

He was arrested and fought his extradition to the US. However on 12 October 2006 his final appeal was turned down and he was handed over to the US authorities.
