Thousands of families are stranded on rooftops and upper floors of their homes a week after Typhoon Lekima hit Vietnam as the death toll jumped to 88.

A total of 20m people have been affected by the recent flooding and earlier inundations in July, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Officials have revised the death toll upwards after more bodies were found, including the remains of 13 people in badly-hit province of Nghe An.

Vietnamese officials have described the floods as the worst in 45 years in some regions, following July's deluge.

The floods have destroyed more than 9,500 houses and damaged another 127,500 homes, while 160,000 hectares of rice fields and other crops have been either flooded or wiped out altogether.

Damaged dams and swollen rivers have flooded communities, washing away homes, roads and bridges, and forcing the evacuation of thousands of people.
