A 39-year-old man has been arrested in Co Kildare in connection with suspected sex offences.

The man, who is originally from England, was arrested under a European Arrest Warrant in Athy. He appeared before the High Court last Friday and will appear before the court again this week.

John Richard Murrell was released from prison in England in September of 2000. Police issued an arrest warrant when he failed to report to a probation hostel.

Mr Murrell was arrested by officers from the Garda Extradition Unit last Friday. He is currently being held at Cloverhill Prison in Dublin.

The West Mercia Constabulary hopes to bring him back to England in the coming weeks to appear before the courts.

British police were trying to trace the man for some time and his details had been published on a child exploitation most wanted website.

Information provided by the public was critical in tracking Mr Murrell down, according to British police. They have thanked members of the public who came forward.
