The funeral of 46-year-old firefighter Brian Murray has taken place in Bray.

Mr Murray and his 26-year-old colleague Mark O'Shaughnessy were killed as they battled a blaze in a disused factory in the town last week.

Mr Murray's remains were taken from his home on the north side of the town and the cortege made its way to the Church of the Holy Redeemer on the main street in Bray.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the church and hundreds more lined the route.

His remains arrived after 11.30am for the funeral mass.

Mr Murray's family has written an open letter to the Taoiseach calling for a full-time fire service in Bray.

In the letter the family say they are grateful that Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has initiated a debate about a full-time service for the town.

However the family feel Mr Ahern was misinformed when he said the fact they were part-time firefighters would have made no difference in last week's tragedy.

The family have called on the Taoiseach to withdraw his comments and instead to support a call for a full-time service in Bray.
