An Irish businesswoman has been awarded £47,000 in aggravated damages after taking an unfair dismissal and sex discrimination case against the London Irish Centre.
An employment tribunal ruled that Margaret Murnane, the first ever lay and female director of the centre, had been wrongfully suspended after being subject to a 'vitriolic' and 'abusive' campaign by a subordinate.
It said such a campaign would never have been directed against any of the previous directors, all of whom had been priests.
The London Irish Centre based in Camden is the biggest of its kind in the UK and last year received almost £500,000 in grants from the Irish Government.
The centre's role since 1950s was to meet the needs of Irish migrants flooding into the city.
