EU parliament challenges liquid ban on flights

Liquids - Must be in transparent bag
Liquids - Must be in transparent bag

The European Parliament has called for an urgent review of EU rules limiting the amount of liquids that can be taken onto planes.

The parliament has questioned the security benefits of the restrictions and expressed concern at the confiscations involved.

New security measures restricting liquid volumes in hand luggage were introduced last year after an alleged terrorist plot was uncovered in Britain.

The rules mean EU passengers can only carry on liquids in containers up to 100ml, which must fit into a transparent, re-sealable plastic bag.

The restrictions mean many passengers have bottles and aerosols confiscated at airport security checks.

Now MEPs want the European Commission to ease the rules and work towards abolishing them if there is no proof they are helping the fight against terrorism.

MEPs say they are in favour of measures to guard against terrorism but warn that any steps must be taken in a realistic manner.
