A 24-year-old man has died after he was stabbed several times during a fight in Mahon on the south side of Cork city early today.

He has been named as Brian McKee, of 21 Ballinure Avenue, Mahon.

The father of two was rushed to Cork University Hospital after the emergency services found him with multimple stab wounds on Ballinure Avenue in Mahon, close to St Michael's Cemetery.

It is understood he was among a number of people coming home from a party at around 4.30am this morning when he got into a fight with another man following an altercation with a woman.

Gardai have extended the detention period for a 27-year-old man they arrested in the Mahon area and whom they are questioning in connection with the assault.

He remains in garda custody at the Bridewell.

Neighbours awoke to find a large area cordoned off, as members of the Garda Forensic Team began a thorough examination of the scene from where the man was found to where they believed the fight began.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who saw what happened to contact them.
