Mr Keane had been involved in gang-related crime in Limerick when he was murdered in 2003.

Anthony McCarthy from Fairgreen in Garryowen, Christopher Costello of Moylish Avenue in Ballynanty Beg, David Stanners from Pineview Gardens in Moyross, James McCarthy from Delmege Park in Moyross and Desmond Dundon from Hyde Road were all convicted of Mr Keane's murder.

The Court of Criminal Appeal refused their appeal on all grounds.

After the ruling was delivered, a copy of the 105 page judgment was flung at the judges and one friend of the convicted men yelled abuse at the presiding judge, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns.

The accused men spat at the prosecuting lawyers as they left court and also shouted abuse at members of the media.
