An abducted German journalist and his Afghan translator have been freed in Afghanistan.

No ransom was paid for the pair who were kidnapped from a house late on last night in the Saangar district of the eastern province of Kunar.

He was thought to have travelled to the remote district to report on a NATO-led air strike that killed 23 civilians two weeks ago.

He was the third German national to be kidnapped in Afghanistan in less than two weeks.

Two Germans, one of them found dead on Sunday, were kidnapped in the south of the country last Wednesday.

The Taliban has claimed the abduction of the two other Germans and 23 South Koreans in separate incidents. They have demanded the release of 33 jailed fighters in exchange for the release of the hostages.
