Co Antrim - PSNI officer was shot

The PSNI has arrested a fourth man as part of the investigation into the shooting of an officer in Co Antrim on Saturday night.

The officer was shot in the back after disturbances believed to be linked to ongoing tensions involving the Ulster Defence Association.

A 21-year-old man was picked up by police in Carrickfergus last night.

Three men have already been arrested in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile Northern Ireland's First Minister, Ian Paisley, branded the shooting a cowardly act.

Mr Paisley said the suspected feud involving the UDA could be difficult to stop and warned against heartache for more innocent people.

He said: ‘These feuds between so-called loyalists are a grave indictment upon their communities and I unreservedly condemn such acts. This was a cowardly deed and will be condemned by all right-thinking people.

‘Sadly, once started these feuds take on a momentum and are difficult to stop. The history of such events is that they will only halt when scores are settled, meaning loss of life, with heartache for the innocent men, women and children on the fringes.’

The Democratic Unionist leader called for those involved to pull back from the brink.

The officer who was shot on Saturday is married and works part-time with the PSNI.

He had to be operated on after a bullet lodged in his back following the standoff involving 150 people in the Castlemara area.
