Eircom works to restore phone services

Eircom has said it is still working to return phone services to around 5,000 customers around the country.

The problems are as a direct result of the ongoing bad weather.

A spokesman for the company said between 2,000 and 2,500 repairs were completed yesterday, and by the end of the weekend, that number will have risen to 3,500.

Repair crews have been working throughout the day.

But the company says the ongoing bad weather means it is continuing to receive new reports of faults.

The problems are nationwide, with the worst effected areas including west Cork, Kerry, Sligo, Leitrim, Longford, Roscommon and Wicklow.

Lightning has primarily caused the problems.
